Glasgow Observatory
glasgow observatory

The UK Geoenergy Observatory in Glasgow is one of two research facilities. Commissioned by UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI’s) Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is dedicated to investigating mine-water heat energy and potential heat storage resources.

The Glasgow Observatory site is typical of the coal legacy towns and cities across Scotland and the UK. This makes it a great point of reference in the regeneration of industry towns towards geothermal heat.

Geothermal heat is a largely untapped renewable resource globally. The potential is starting to be realised in Scotland. Water in abandoned mines could open up immense opportunities for reliable, renewable sources of heat and energy storage.
